Environmentally friendly process for solvent-recovery and production of high-quality bio-fuel

Pervasiv has developed a novel separation technology and process for effective and inexpensive solvent recovery, bioethanol dehydration and spent acid recycling.

The Market

Increasing environmental legislation against emissions requires facilities to deal with emissions and industrial waste, including recovery and reuse of solvents from electronics, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and waste recycling industries. The global annual solvent market is currently estimated at USD 19 billion, out of which USD 13 billion are assumed candidates for solvent recovery. Also, the increased demand for bioethanol open new horizons for solvent dehydration.

The Technology

The platform technology is based on an ion-exchange hollow-fiber membrane for pervaporation[1], across which solvents are separated or dehydrated to a concentration of more than 99%.  Pervasiv's technology allows for the development of an inexpensive, versatile, easily assembled, operated and maintained, chemically resistant and stabile, environmentally friendly and highly efficient pervaporation apparatus, tailored for on and off-site separation of solvent mixtures.

Status

During the company's two first years at ATI, Pervasiv built a 2m2 laboratory pilot model by which they  successfully dehydrated solvents like IPA, Ethanol, Acetone, MEK, THF, Ethyl Acetate, Ethyl Lactate, NMP and others, and separated mixtures of MeOH-Hexane. During the following two years Pervasiv built two pilot plants, each with a membrane area of 10m2, for Pervaporation and Vapour Permeation. In testing alcohol solutions from industry, Pervasiv obtained IPA and Ethanol concentrations of 99.5% ! The same sized prototype has been used in Pervasiv's Diffusion-Dialysis acid recovery, successfully treating mixtures of MSA, Sulfuric Acid, Hydrochloric Acid, Hydrofluoric Acid with various metals.
