PHAGOLUM - Diagnostic System for Sepsis and other Clinical Infections
The Phagolum diagnostic system will enable early detection, identification of various Sepsis stages, and identification of the causes of infection, all in the same test.
THE MARKET
Sepsis is a systemic response to infection, which causes organ failure and death in severe cases. While Sepsis is a leading cause of death in intensive care units, early detection and suitable treatment can greatly improve survival rates. Each year, more than 750,000 people in the US develop severe sepsis and the cost of treatment exceeds $17 billion annually. With an aging population and a growing number of interventional procedures, sepsis incidents in the US are projected to reach one million by 2020. While several American and German companies are developing tools for early diagnosis, Phagolum’s platform technology may detect the infection type and offer early and accurate diagnosis of clinical infections beyond sepsis.
THE TECHNOLOGY
Phagolum is a simple to perform diagnostic system, which screens for characteristic activities of the immune system and provides an accurate and comprehensive assessment of a patient's medical condition within two hours, including type and severity of infection. The technology is based on the combination of biological methods and a mathematical modeling system, involving a proprietary algorithm for performing a multi-parameter analysis of the characteristic metabolic patterns of neutrophils in a blood sample, as created in response to infection caused by a viral, bacterial or fungal agent. By using a multi-parameter analysis and characteristic metabolic patterns, PhagoLum can identify the cause of a disease as well as effectively determine the severity of an infection and the ability of the patient to recover subject to treatment. The Phagolum kit will contain biological reagents and proprietary software for analysis of the recorded data. PhagoLum can also be used for the assessment of treatment effectiveness as a monitoring tool.
Phagulom is founded upon Dr. Moni Magrisso's research at Ben Gurion University. Dr. Avi Rainhartz is promoting Phagolum and will manage the company's operations during the two-year R&D at ATI Technologies, during which time they will develop a prototype kit and QC protocols
